Executive of the Month of January: Vanessa Curran

We’re proud to highlight Vanessa Curran, our Executive of the Month for January!

“Hi everyone! I’m Vanessa, an undergraduate student at Western University, specializing in Environmental Science. At HNP, I’m part of the Communications Department, where I focus on content creation, outreach, and engagement to expand our impact. I love being part of a team that’s dedicated to meaningful environmental initiatives, and I’m excited for all that’s ahead at HNP!”

When asked why she joined HNP, she shared:
“I started following HNP’s events and saw how dedicated the organization was to making an impact. I wanted to be part of a community of passionate youth, working on real environmental initiatives. HNP has given me a space to collaborate, learn, and contribute in a meaningful way.”

Currently, Vanessa is working on the February newsletter, where she’s writing about the environmental cost of browsing behavior and the rise of AI in sustainability. She’s excited to expand HNP’s communications efforts and find new ways to engage our audience.

Vanessa also highlighted what she loves most about HNP:
“The strong organizational structure and accountability! Even though our team is spread out, there’s always something exciting happening, and the dedication everyone brings makes each project feel impactful.”
One environmental issue she’s particularly passionate about is the misuse of road salt.

“While road salt is essential for winter safety, excessive use has major environmental consequences—contaminating freshwater, harming wildlife, and fueling the spread of invasive species. It’s an issue that doesn’t get enough attention, and I think there’s a lot more we can do to address it.”
Fun Fact: Vanessa has a pet red-eared slider turtle, and she misses her while away at school!

Thank you, Vanessa, for your incredible dedication and contributions to HNP!
